Game of Thrones – The Exhibit, Oslo 2014

April 28, 2014 by Line Evensen Leave a Comment

This weekend, HBO Nordic opened their Game of Thrones – The Exhibit in Oslo, Norway. And of course we had to visit!

First of all, we just have to say how awestruck we are by the dedication of the Game of Throne-fans. When we arrived pretty early on opening day, the queue went around the whole block! We’ve heard of both Italians, Czechs and Finnish people traveling to Norway just to visit the exhibit. Norwegians also travelled from around the country. Some say on the Facebook event page that they waited for 6,5 hours to get in. At the end of the day and after 2500 fans inside the gates, HBO Nordic actually had to cut the line, telling people to come back the next day. But do not despair! The exhibit are staying in Oslo until 30th of April, from 10:00-20:00 every day.

On arrival, we were greeted by maps of Westeros and banners from around the realm. Then the exhibit opened up a treasure chest for the fans. On our right were Daenerys’ dresses from the first season, a dragon and dragon eggs. On our left were Lady Melisandre’s red dress, and Ser Davos’ severed finger bones in their pouch. Further on, we met the outfits from the Purple Wedding (and I have to say I had no idea of the detailed arrangements on Margaerys wedding dress. It was epic!), we saw The Hound’s pretty raggedy (and huge) armor. We met Needle, Jaime’s new (and old) hand, we got to witness The Mountain’s enormous sword and the awesome skull mask (and skull cup) belonging to no other than Lord of Bones.

Of course we had to ascend The Wall with Oculus Rift. There were a separate line for this, but it wasn’t too long a wait, and it was definitely worth the while. We don’t want to spoil any possible surprises, but for those of you who are not familiar with the technology: With the use of this virtual reality head-mounted display and headphones, we were able to experience how it would feel like to ascend The Wall by open elevators in 4D.

Last, but not least, were of course THE Iron Throne. And it were ours to take – along with the rest of the 30 000 fans HBO Nordic are awaiting during the exhibition in Oslo.

People should understand that this is no ordinary exhibition. This is a platform for fans to show their passionate dedication, and a way for HBO Nordic to engage with the fans and give them something in return for their loyalty. The length of the waiting line probably tells a great deal of how welcome an event like this is in Norway. It’s not often we get to take part of world wide happenings, so this proves the Norwegian people are more than welcoming it. Also, since we have our own Kristofer Hivju playing Tormund Giantsbane (which also had his gear exhibited), it’s only fair we get to show our appreciation towards HBO, George R.R. Martin and the whole world of Westeros.

We are impressed by the crew behind the series and their care for details when bringing George R. R. Martins Westeros to life. Now that we have seen the costumes, the armors and all the detailed belongings of the different characters , it will add a new dimension when watching the series.

So thank you so much for this great experience, HBO!

The seventh and final season of True Blood wil air on June 22nd ( June 23rd on HBO Nordic). Hopefully a lot of questions will be answered: Will the humans and vampires finally get along and be able to live in peace and harmony? Will Sookie finally find and settle with here true love? Rumours says that the last season will focus more on the original cast members in Bon Temps. As fans of the series, and especially the first seasons, we really hope these rumours are true and are looking forward to the ending of an era in vampire series. Will the show finally face the True Death?

Game of Thrones: The Exhibition

March 26, 2014 by Line Evensen Leave a Comment

The 4th season of the epic HBO series Game of Thrones, based on George R. R. Martins best selling book series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, is returning April 7th for another season filled with duplicity and treachery, death and survival, conquest and triumph.

When the 3rd season launched last year, HBO went on tour with an international Game of Thrones exhibition, to bring the marvelous and fascinating world of Westeros to the fans. It was – obviously – a great success. I mean, it was free AND you could take pictures of yourself sitting on the Iron Throne. Whats not to like?

Great news is that the exhibition again is on a world tour visiting five cities; Mexico City, Rio de Janiero, Oslo, Toronto Belfast, Austin, and Vancouver. This time HBO promises to offer ‘a fresh perspective on the show, focusing on key places, characters and relationships from the series’. Amongst the displays are weapons, props, armors, costumes, storyboards and more. You can also dive into the world of Westeros through a new, interactive experience. HBO will also offer merchandise from their shop.

Everything completely free of charge. What an awesome way for HBO to show their gratitude towards the fans! This year I was thrilled to see that the exhibit is coming to Posthallen in Oslo, Norway the 26th-30th April. I have read all the books and seen every episode, so I can’t wait to explore Westeros in a new and different way.

True Detective – true magnificence

We were thrilled to hear that Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey had been casted for this new HBO series. We didn’t really know what to expect back then, but we instantly knew that it would be great! True Detective is written and created by Nic Pizzolatto (The Killing). The finale of season one just aired, and we are really amazed by what we’ve seen.

The plot of the series does mainly take place in Louisiana, 2012. The two State Police Detectives Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson) are brought in to revisit a homicide case they worked in 1995, involving some bizarre ritualistic murder. This way the series jumps elegantly back in forth on the timeline, to reveal their back story, and the case they had been working on. The narrative structure of the series works perfectly in its way to tell the story.

© HBO

© HBO

As mentioned, the plot is set in Lousiana, and I must say that the production crew has done a terrific job picking the scenery. The large fields, forested and sometimes industrial environment makes a perfect set for such a gloomy plot. The vast uninhabited desolated swamplands, except from some idiosyncratic white trash trailer park kinda places, leaves the viewer with a claustrophic, dismal and eere feeling. A feeling that is already set when the amazingly crafted vignette starts.

And rise with me forever across the silent sand,
And the stars will be your eyes and the wind will be my hands.
Handsome Family – Far From Any Road (lyrics)

Being a crime series, the most intriguing part is not the solving of the crimes themselves. The most interesting part is the relationship between two completely different personalities. Marty is an extroverted hypocrit of a christian with an almost primtive attitude, but at the same time it’s impossible not to get sympathy for him. Rust on the other hand is an introverted, almost annoyingly self-controlled nihilist, with an almost authistic view for details. Despite the differences, they fulfill each other perfectly as partners, and it’s impossible not to love both characters. They are a perfect example of the diversities we see in people in general, and it’s really quite an interesting journey from a social anthropological point of view.

It’s hard to find something in a man who rejects people as much as you do.
Marty to Rust

I haven’t seen such an amazing series since last years Top of the Lake. Even though the latter doesn’t really reach the same level as True Detective, it kinda has the same gloominess and might appeal to the same audience. I feel that the psychological part plays a bit larger role in True Detective, and is probably what amazes me the most. The series is filled with heavy use of symbolism, making it fascinating to inpret their meanings. Probably needless to repeat how good this is. Just check it out. Now!

The nazi zombies of the Norwegian splatter Dead Snow are back!

March 11, 2014 by Jan F. Lindsø Leave a Comment

A few week ago we went to the cinema to see the sequel of Dead Snow, a movie we thought was really awesome back i 2009. The first movie was created by a group of friends, that also did the Norwegian low budget cult movie Kill Buljo, which obviously was a parody on the famous Tarantino flick Kill Bill. I’ve watched both the mentioned movies, and really enjoyed them both, so I kinda had in mind what to expect from Dead Snow 2. The crew behind Dead Snow, received a lot of attention from the first one. It was even nominated to the MTV Scream Awards for “Best horror movie” and the epic category of “Most memorable mutilation”, which the first Dead Snow movie had plenty of.

Dead Snow 2

Dead Snow 2 continues where the first one left off. The main character, Martin, is the only survivor from the zombie attack in the first movie, where all his friends were slaughtered on a holiday trip in the Norwegian wilderness. The zombies, with their leader Herzog, is now on their way down from the mountains. Their goal is to fulfil their old German debt, and to conquer the world, as their zombie army is slowly growing bigger.

Since, the first movie, the director Tommy Wirkola has been busy with larger Hollywood productions like Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. This didn’t exactly put a damper on our expectations for this movie. We knew that Dead Snow 2 would be a larger production than the first one, but we surely didn’t expect it to be this good. It’s a cliché that sequels doesn’t live up to their predecessors, but I must say that this one surely did. Unlike a lot of other Norwegian movies, this one is even on a par with international zombie movies.

Ørjan Gamst (Herzog)

Ørjan Gamst (Herzog)

It’s not a secret that the crew of Black Forest Magazine are huge fans of darker forms of music. Metal to be more precise. Therefore we had to  get in touch with Ørjan Gamst which played Herzog, the nazi zombie leader, and actually has a background in metal music. We wanted to know if his musical interests has formed him as an actor:

Well yes, i think it has. Especially when playing a villain like Herzog. I even had a theme song, Death Walking Terror by Cannibal Corpse, in my head while playing him.
And you have certain metal attitude that often gives you an edge when these sort of characters are brought to life. Also the experience from standing on a stage as a vocalist helped a lot. Does it even make sense? Its hard to explain, but i feel it has helped me alot.

For us zombie fans it’s pretty absurd to see how successful the genre has become, with movies like Dead Snow, and series like Walking Dead. And not to speak about all the games. We had to ask Ørjan why he thinks the genre has had its renaissance:

Well, the whole Walking Dead hype is somewhat to blame of course. And since the early 2000 we’ve had a revamp of the genre with remakes of classics, zombie comedies (Shaun of the Dead, Fido etc.) and so on. The whole zombie niche has gone mainstream. And the horror-guilty pleasure watching zombies getting the wrong end of a shotgun, or the ever popular ‘stupid teenagers getting ripped to pieces’ still works for me atleast.

Dead Snow 2

We surely can’t do nothing but agree with Ørjan, and must say that this recipe works flawlessly in Dead Snow 2. We’re not going to spoil anything, but I must say that I haven’t seen such a creative use of intestines before. All in all, the movie was really worth the watch, and is recommended for everybody that’s into splatter movies. It is obvious that the production was a lot more professional this time, and it was great to see such high profiled actors in this kind of setting as well. Ørjan’s character Herzog is probably the most noticable, and his appearance is simply frightful. Ørjan did a great job playing this character, and we will be looking out for him in the future. We can even announce that he has been picking up his music career again:

I just joined a new band, Landmenn, and I’m doing vocals for some new tracks later this month. I’m excited to be part of this project, it’s very different from my former band Slogstorm. Its good to be back as a vocalist, I’ve missed it.
The acting on the other hand, I’ll guess I’ll just see what comes my way. I never planned a career in acting, but if the opportunity presents itself.. My dream role would be the next Darth Vader, being a star wars nerd. But any villain would be awsome. Fingers crossed, you never know what happens next.

Vincent Price – The Elegant Side of Evil

March 2, 2014 by Line Evensen Leave a Comment

We have great news! Some of you probably know of the legendary Vincent Price. But for those of you who does not, he was one of the most awesome actors ever to portrait dark and evil characters in horror films and film noir. Now his daughter, Victoria, has launched a website to keep his legacy alive on the Internet. And it’s really awesome!

Vincent Price also did Batman.

Vincent Price also did Batman.

Our first meeting with Vincent was at the end of his career (and his life), in his last feature film which was Edward Scissorhands. Vincent played the role as The Inventor, a role Tim Burton wrote specially for him. The Inventor creates Edward, a human-like boy, and teaches him how to be a loving and reflected human being. But before Edward is physically finished, The Inventor dies, leaving Edward alone with a broken heart, and scissors for hands. The movie is one of our  all time favourites by the way, and if you have’nt seen it, you really should!

Screenshot from Edward Scissorhands.

But I digress. Vincent Prices’ daughter recently launched the new website which gives her fathers fans a really personal look into his life, his personality and career. The daughter can tell on her blog that his two favourite aphorisms were

A man who limits his interests limits his life

and

If you are always curious, you will never be bored.

Victoria vividly describes her extroverted fathers curiosity for technology, and she is certain that he would have loved interacting with fans on social media. So her goal is to follow in his footprints and interact with his fans through the site and at horror conventions. He would have wanted it, she tells Fearnet.com. The best of it all, is that this is just the beginning of what she wants to give fans in the future. Sounds really promising!

A really fun fact we discovered is that Victoria is not a horror fan! But when she describes on the blog why, it’s not so hard to understand her;

Imagine you’re a little kid who absolutely adores your dad. You think he’s the kindest, gentlest, sweetest, most loving person you know. And then imagine that you see him doing horrible things to people–like really horrible–killing them and dipping them in vats of wax! And even worse, you have to watch horrible things happen to him–being burned, boiled alive, hacked to death by angry mobs, just to name a few. How would that make you feel?

For those of us interested in the darker sides of his curriculum, the Edgar Allan Poe related works is pretty obligatory. Also the horror movies from 1960s are a must see (although most of them are recently remade Hollywood style, so don’t pick the wrong one!). Price also did voiceover on Alice Cooper‘s  Welcome to My Nightmare from 1975.

Vincent Price and Alice Cooper.

Vincent Price was an art lover and collecter, and did actually go to Yale studying Art History. From the 1960s he was involved in the Vincent Price Collection of Fine Art, and the Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College. Another fun fact: He commissioned works of our favourite artist Salvador Dalí!

Noell Osvald – young and promising artist

February 18, 2014 by Line Evensen Leave a Comment

About a year ago we discovered some amazing self-portraits by a young woman from Hungary named Noell Osvald.

It was the minimalistic and surreal aestetics that first caught our eyes. When we took a closer look at the pictures, we were impressed by the compositions and the artistic qualities of Noells work.

In an interview with My Modern Met she revealed that the reason for her only using black and white is that she finds colors distracting:

– I feel the same way about clothes and other matters of appearance, which why I like to reduce my images to forms, composition and content.

Dom Pérignon and David Lynch with Champagne collaboration

Dom Pérignon

Dom Pérignon

Being fans of both David Lynch and… yes, Champagne, it pleased us when we found out that David Lynch did a collaboration with famous vintage Champagne brand Dom Pérignon  in 2012. For most of you, surreal film director David Lynch, is probably most famous for his grand work like Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Lost Highway, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Dr. Apart from being a film director, and even a competent photographer, he has now also designed the label of a limited edition of Dom Pérignon. We’re excited!

And yeah, remember to check out filmmaker Luke Gilford’s surrealist portrait of the opening night party for the Champagne:
